SHEEPHERDING LESSONS
Herding LessonsĀ at GemStar Ranch
a little about herding training at the ranch...

Karen of Quality Dog Training, runs her dogs at the Open level in USBCHA Sheepdog Trials.  She has been invited to compete with her dogs at Soldier Hollow, qualified and done well at the USBCHA National Finals, and recently was ask to be on, and accepted, to be on the USA Team at the World Sheepdog Trial in Landielo, Wales.

In addition to competing in USBCHA (open field) trials, her dogs have done very well in ASCA, and they have advanced titles in AHBA, with several High in Trials. In fact, she has tied herself several times for High in Trial out of the Advanced Class, in both ranch classes and HTAD III.

Karen brings years of experience in dog behavior to her sheepherding classes. Training is customized and tailored for each individual dog. She focuses on an empahisis on the bond between dog and handler, stockmanship, and training in a kind
manner where the dog understands what is expected.
Herding lessons are held at GemStar Ranch, a working ranch where you are likely to see sheep, goats and llamas, located next to open range land and grazing cow calf pairs.

This is not a grass filled park, and smoothly graded parking lot! You will be working your dog in a "real" setting, at a "real" ranch, not an imitation! Yes, your dog will walk on dirt, see tractors, chickens, barb wire, and lots of open spaces. Some people are surprised by this... just so you know what to expect!

In addition to the joy of seeing your dog doing what she was bred to do, you can enjoy a morning or afternoon in the country, where you are likely to see cattle grazing in open rangeland, hawks soaring thru the sky, and hearing the distinct "Chi Ca Go" of the California Quail. If you are lucky, in the springtime you will see whole families of Quail with their babies following behind them. So, a trip to GemStar Ranch is often more than "just a herding lesson", it is often an opportunity to relax, meet others with your same interest, an escape from the busy city, while enjoying an outing with your dog. We enjoy sharing the country with you, and hope you too will enjoy your time with us.

Karen believes in working with the dog's natural instinct, customizing training for each dog. A variety of livestock is used to help each dog reach their highest potential.  If you think this might be something you would enjoy, please contact us.
